This week the 1st team were at home to Southport and Birkdale. On first were Carlton Oldham and Dave Porter (Below). Carlton was in fine form and took the first game 11:6. Dave had no answer to Carlton’s stylish shot play and succumbed 11:0 in the second game. In control throughout, Carlton cruised to victory in the third game to give the home team the start needed.
Emily Whitlock has been out of form recently and faced Matt Sherman. Matt knows his way around a squash court and has the ability to hit some good shots. Fortunately, Emily was back to her old, or rather young self. She was quicker to the ball and was making her shots (Above). Matt kept her on her toes, but she was never in trouble and eased to win in 3.
Meanwhile on the show court, Andy Whipp played Aaron Ken. Andy is undefeated this year, but he was missing his shots in the first game. Even so, he was strong enough to take the game 11:7. Then he really got going and Aaron never got a look in after that. Andy won the next two games 11:2 each to secure the points (Below).
Following on, was Adrian Waller against Kyle Finch. Kyle made a good start and Adrian did not have it all his own way. The first game was close. Adrian won 11:9, and it was a similar story in the second; this time 11:8 to Adrian. But the fight had been drawn out of Kyle and Adrian easily won the third game.
Finally, it was Rob Downer against Lucas Hughes (Top). Rob’s matches are never dull, and the home supporters were expectant. They were not disappointed. Lightning fast reflexes and super-fast around the court, the players made a spectacle of it. In truth, Rob always had the edge, and this was reflected in the scores. Rob ran out the winner in 3 games.
We needed points to take the fight to Grove Park and this was the perfect result. We have closed the gap to 2 points. The top three teams have now drawn away a little from the rest. Next week, we are away at Tame Valley and Grove Park face Wigan. It is close this season and every point will count.
