It was a hard fought match at Alderley Edge. Andy Whipp started proceedings brightly edging the first game from Harry Falconer by 13:11. The second was close, but Harry levelled the score. After that, it was Harry who was in charge, winning the match 3 games to 1. Following on to Court 1 was Nat Fairhurst who started what turned out to be an epic battle with James Pickles. In a close fought first game, Nat won by 11:9.
Meanwhile, Abhay Singh (above) cruised to an easy win over Ollie Harris. Back on Court 1, Nat switched off and lost the second game 4:11. The tie was perfectly balanced: 1 match each, 1 game each. Emily Whitlock was next up on Court 2 against Mike Potter. Another sharp performance from Emily meant she was never troubled.
By now, Nat had regained his concentration and won a tight third game. The fourth was equally close but it went the other way: 2 games all! The players were now giving everything they had. With similar styles, neither could find the winning shot. So the rallies were long, really long, and punishing. The fifth was close and slightly nervy. But eventually James pulled out a lead and took the fifth game to the delight of the home crowd.
With the match tied, it was now down to the new signing Rob Downer (below) to deliver.
Rob took the first from Tom Bamford 11:8. Advantage Warrington. The next was close but Rob saw it through 12:10. Having gained the upper hand, he then clinically finished it off. An impressive debut performance and we look forward to see him play again this coming Tuesday.
