The 1st team put behind them their first defeat in over a year to win a close fought match at home against Grove Park 1.
Andy Whipp was on court first playing Richie Fellows. Andy, who is still below par but improving put up a good fight but, eventually, went down 11-13 in the 4th game. On the other court, Nat Fairhurst was slightly off song this week and also lost to Yawar Abbas in 4 games. The home side was now two matches down.
Next up on Court 6 was Rob Taylor playing Oscar Beech. Rob’s consistently accurate shots forced Oscar into mistakes and Rob won comfortably 3-0. At the same time, Alex Hodgetts was playing Morgan Hibberd on Court 5. Alex lost the first game 6-11 making many unforced errors - things were not looking good for a comeback. Fortunately Alex then got into his stride and won the next 2 games. The home crowd started to feel more comfortable, but it was short-lived. Morgan brought the match level winning 15-13 in a close 4th game. Alex bounced back again, taking the lead in the 5th but then the nervousness returned when he squandered 4 match points in a row. Eventually, he found the winning shot he was looking for to win the game and bring the tie all-square.
On now to the final match between Adam Taylor and Alex Cutts. Adam, now fully recovered from last week’s painful heel, was in a class of his own and easily won in 3 to restore the winning habit. But it is tight at the top of the Division at the first half break. The 1st team is only 4 points clear of Bowdon 1 who face each other in the last match before Christmas.
The 2nd team were well beaten at Tame Valley. On Thursday, 3rd, 4th and 6th teams all lost having had to move a player up to fill spots left by illness, injuries and work commitments. The 5th and 8th teams won but the 7th team withdrew and did not play.
