NWCSL 1st Team – Match 10

Main Image

The last match before the Christmas break took the team to Southport. Nat Fairhurst was on first and made short work of Ben Fletcher. Nat is playing some of his best squash at the moment and it was great to see him playing controlled and varied squash to win to love.

Andy Whipp was on next playing S&B’s Danny Massaro. It was an interesting match to watch. Andy was uncharacteristically careless in the first and lost out out 11:7. Andy was better in the second but resistance from Danny forced the second game into a tie-break which Andy clinched 10:12. After that Andy found his rhythm and it was plain sailing from there on in (below).

Meanwhile Emily Whitlock took on Matt Sherman on the second court (top). Emily was in complete control for the first two games. Matt played better in the third but Emily won the tie-break to secure another 3 :0 victory. Emily has won all her 7 games so far and only dropped a single game.

On the show-court, Adam Taylor was up against Lucas Hughes. This was a similar game to Andy’s. An error-strewn start saw Adam lose the first game. Then the shots started to go in and Adam won the next three to 7, to 4 and to 5.

Finally it was 4th string Matt Godson making his first appearance for the team this year against Dave Porter (below - Matt in blue). Matt won the first without problem. But it was different story in the second with hard fought close rallies. Matt just edged it 10/12. However that game took its toll on Dave and he had little left for the third, which Matt won to 5 to secure another 20 points for the team.

At the time of writing, the Bowdon result has not been posted but it is understood to be Crewe 17-8 Bowdon. That keeps Warrington at the top of the table and 35 points clear of Bowdon who are in second place. Alderley Edge and The Northern are now third and fourth respectively not far behind Bowdon. The first half was completed undefeated and the team can enjoy their Christmas fare with great satisfaction. They had better not eat too much though, as the next match is away at Tame Valley on 8thJanuary.
