NWCSL Match Report – Week 7

Following the short break, the 1st team was on the road again; this time at Wigan Squash. First on court was Alex Hodgetts who made short work of Mike McDonald. Nat Fairhurst started comfortably on the other court winning the first game against Paul Thomas, but then he got his tactics wrong - playing too many short balls - allowing Paul to take the second 13-11. Nat reverted to a better mix of shots for the next game, which soon paid dividends. Showing some excellent court movement, Nat went on to win the next two games to win the match.

Andy Whipp followed Alex on the first court playing Tamindar Gata Aura. Looking decidedly rusty, he lost the first 2 games to some great shots from Tamindar. Nevertheless, he was moving better than he has been all season and the Andy Whipp of old returned. In a gritty performance, he took the next 3 games to turn the match round and secure the tie.

Rob Taylor was on court next. Rob has not lost since the start of last season but, uncharacteristically, his trademark accuracy deserted him. The match was 1-1 but Rob just managed to do enough in the next 2 games to keep his undefeated record. Finally Adam Taylor rounded off the evening with a convincing win over Ryan Atherton to finish the tie, 20-4, and stretch the lead at the top of Division 1 to 10 points over Bowden.

The same night at home, a weakened 2nd team came up against a Southport and Birkdale team headed by Emyr Evans and Daniel Massaro. They proved far too strong and the team lost 20-0 in the other Division 1 match.

On Thursday, the 3rd Team went down to Prestbury 1 and, despite being at full strength, so did the 4th team away to Xaverian 2. Both the 5th and the 6th teams won their respective matches in the 4th Division, as did the 7th team in the 5th Division. The 8th team had a walk-over against Xavarian 5.
